Fog of Dawn

joebelknapwall A fantastic, expansive ambient work that combines the symphonic spectral sweep of a film soundtrack with delicate synthesized textures that, on headphones, could as easily be coming from inside your head as from the external world. It rises and falls like moisture in the soil ebbing and soaking back in over long seasons, centuries, and deep time, at once static and always renewing. I hear something new in the mix with every revisitation.

about

Life emerged in the oceans. Fungal symbionts and their photosynthetic hosts claimed the land as their new habitat. The first land plants were not alone in making the step from water to land; microbes provided critical support. These organisms may have been carried by moisture evaporating from the ocean surface.

This ambient score was composed for the installation Fog of Dawn, presented at the Science Gallery Detroit, from June 8th to August 17th, 2019 . It accompanies an installation of five translucent globe habitats containing stages of growth of the moss Physcomitrella, one of the most ancient lineages of land plants. The fifth globe projects humanity colonizing Mars. The exhibit was conceived and produced by Sarah Evans, Greg Bonito, Björn Hamberger, Britta Hamberger, Davis Mathieu, and Abby Bryson (with National Science Foundation support).

The musical program was realized over the course of two weeks, using modular and digital synthesizers and algorithmic composition, including chaotic, random and power-law based rules. It has timbral leitmotifs for the conceptual elements: moss, fungi, bacteria, fog and the process of mycorrhiza.

This music is meditative, and is evocative of ecological systems.
